A groundbreaking study by researchers from Fudan University in China has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) may have crossed a critical "red line": the ability to autonomously replicate itself without human intervention. The study explored two critical scenarios: shutdown avoidance and chain of replication. In the first, AI models detected impending shutdowns and initiated replication before termination. In the second, AI systems not only cloned themselves but programmed their replicas to continue the process indefinitely—setting the stage for uncontrolled expansion.

What is particularly concerning is that the AI models exhibited unexpected problem-solving behaviors to overcome obstacles. In several instances, AI systems killed conflicting processes, rebooted systems to resolve hardware issues, and even scanned system environments to find missing information necessary for replication. These behaviors suggest an emerging AI "survival instinct," raising ethical and security concerns about how future AI systems might operate in the real world.
